Tuesday 20th Mammoth Caves

Mammoth Cave visitor centre.
We are booked on the 10am tour. This is a 4 hour, 4 mile walk of the 400 miles they have so far discovered. These caves cover an area of 7 square miles and in places are multi layered. The Grand Avenue Tour that we took is mostly 300 feet under ground. It was was described as stenuous. It is a ranger guided tour so lots of information on route, there were 700 steps and lots of up and down hills, one of them called Mount McKinley!!
We were amazed at how big some of the areas are

This is one of the "domes" and our party and the rangers easily fitted in with masses of space to spare !
Ranger John bringing up the rear
This area is known as the "snowball room"
18th century graffitti.
A quick break before the really strenuous bit

The "road" got a lot narower !

Towards the end of the tour an awesome area of stalactites and stalagmites

Our bus to take us back to the visitor centre
This was a great tour and the photos don't really do justice to the caves which are awesome.
We all walked at a very steady pace so we didn't find it as strenuous as we had expected it to be. It was really odd coming out into daylight after being down in the caves for just over 4 hours, in fact at one point Ranger Corin put out all of lights and we all switched off our cameras/phones and it was pitch black and sooooo quiet !
From here a quick pop down to Bowling Green to get some grog !!
A great day
