Wednesday 14th Alum Cave Bluff

This photo was taken this morning from the 441 road through The Smokies. The pointy bit is where we climbed up to yesterday !!
The beginning of the Alum Cave Bluff trail

Nice peaceful river on another beautiful sunny but chilly morning. Like yesterday it's only 9.15 am and will get hot later.
Gentle walk beside the river !! This is only for the first half mile then it is a trail of roots and rocks but great fun.
Oh my gosh and there was 5 of these to cross !

Ummm I'm smiling !
Last one and going up !

Steps up through the cave
This one out of sequence. A nice comfy place for a rest
Onwards and upwards

Just about at the top.

And we're there. Alum Cave Bluff. What a fantastic sight and a great view, well worth the climb and hiking the 13oo feet elevation, 400 feet short of yesterday at Chimney Tops but by far the best of the two
Time to sit and reflect

The rocky overhang
The view, fantastic
From here you can go onto Monte Le Conte which is another 2.5 miles over more of the same steep rocky terrain. Folks do hike it in a day or stay over at the lodge.
Back down and round hike of 3 hours.
Quick packed lunch by the river and off to next hike but sadly the road has been closed for refurbishment and by the time we discover this it is too late to rearrange the afternoon as we need to get the car back by 4.30 so a couple of hours rest instead !!
And tomorrow we are off to Nashville :)
